U3A Southland meeting place

U3A (University of the Third Age) began in France and has spread to many countries around the world. There are approximately 90 clubs in NZ. The aim is to provide low-cost education to people who are retired (or in the Third Age). This allows us to keep up with changes in the world, helps maintain a degree of mental dexterity and clarity of thought.

Topics we have covered in the last 12 months include Universal Basic Income and Equity, Aspects of Crime, Justice and Forensics, Predator Free New Zealand 2050, Contemporary Music in the South, Atmospheric Rivers and the Kakapo Story, Housing: The great divide between Ownership and Renting.  Topics can be suggested by members or the Committee. These are called ‘Series’ and are made up of 4 or 5 speakers, who attend in person or speak by ZOOM, one speaker per week. At the end of each talk is an opportunity for questions or comments. At the end of each series, there is a one-off talk on other topics.

JUNE PROGRAMME >   Wildling Conifers

COSTS: there is a charge of $15 or $20 per series, which covers speaker payments, room hire and afternoon tea.

If there is interest, we also have the capacity to form small interest groups, who decide their own theme e.g., Politics, E-Bike group, Music, Coffee group.   The group decide where and when to meet. We also do at least one bus trip per year, exploring Southland and its surprises. The group tends to form social bonds as well and works in a cheerful and co-operative way.

New members are welcome.   EMAIL HERE   or contact either;-                         Paul Morris 021 1879 176  Chairperson
